“WWAKE is a metaphor for the way I like to design,” says Yau. “Like the waves in a body of water, I like to design many integrations of the same gesture and let the collections speak for themselves.”
Wing Yau, the founder and designer of WWAKE, was a trained sculptor before embarking into her jewelry life. After making a series of necklaces based on textile sculptures, Yau developed WWAKE in 2012 with the intention of merging art with the intimacy of jewelry. In 2013 she launched her first fine jewelry collection, for which the brand is known for today.
Transforming Textile Waste Into New Fashion with La Réunion
Named after the island off the coast of Madagascar, La Reunion is Nigerian-American Sarah Nsikak's hard work and creativity come to life. Having worked in the fashion industry for several years after completing a Masters Degree in Art Therapy, Nsikak noticed the exorbitant amount of waste generated in the fashion industry and was inspired to create La Réunion: quilted, vibrant, one of a kind garments hand made by Nsikak with love. All Nsikak's pieces are made exclusively using recycled material sourced from fashion designers based in New York. Special textiles are also sourced through vintage stores and estate sales.
La Reunion's many influences include the vibrant stories of African culture, post colonial African countries, ideas surrounding reclaimed beauty, togetherness, color, joy, and inviting oneself back to what was always there all along. It is materializing an idea of sacred and unabashed individuality and everyone is invited.
At The Root of Wol Hide's SS23 Collection
The cotton used in Wol Hides SS23 Sand colorway has a fascinating origin — this color grown cotton, derived from a plant native to the Andes, almost became extinct due to the mainstream preference for a bright white cotton but has recently been saved from extinction by select breeders and farmers. This naturally-colored cotton is not only such a beautiful colorway, but requires significantly less water to produce.
